Understanding Motorcycle Specs: hp, Torque, Weight and More
Don't be confused by spec sheets. Here's what horsepower, torque, kerb weight and seat height actually mean for real riding.
## Horsepower (hp / kW)
Power is the rate at which the engine does work - it determines top speed and how fast the bike accelerates at high rpm. 1 kW ≈ 1.36 hp.
## Torque (N·m)
Torque is twisting force - it determines how punchy the bike feels in the mid-range. A big, torquey single or triple feels strong at low rpm; a peaky four-cylinder needs revs.
## Kerb weight
Kerb weight includes all fluids and a full tank - this is what you actually push around. Lighter bikes are easier to manoeuvre, flick into corners and pick up.
## Seat height
Measured in mm, it's the distance from the ground to the seat. Shorter riders should prioritise this; 795-825 mm suits most average-height riders, 960 mm (MX/Rally) needs long legs.
## Fuel capacity
Bigger tanks mean more range but more weight. A 15 L tank on the 500RR gives about 250-300 km of realistic riding.
## Putting it together
Check the power-to-weight ratio first - it tells you more about real performance than either number alone.
